Professor Vassilis Gorgoulis was one of 58 new members elected in May from Europe, China, Japan, New Zealand and the United States, who join over 1700 outstanding researchers in life sciences who hold membership of EMBO.

In recognition of their contributions to life science research, new Members and Associate Members are invited to present their research at the EMBO Members’ Meeting which takes place in late October this year at the organisations’ home city of Heidelberg.


Professor Gorgoulis said: This is a great honour for me and I thank Manchester for their great and enthusiastic support, especially my long term collaborator Professor Paul Townsend, Associate Dean in MHS and professor in ICS. We are committed to continuing our research in to cell cycle deregulation during carcinogenesis.


Professor Townsend said: Working with Vassilis is an honour and a sincere pleasure. The recognition by EMBO of his and Manchester’s advances in cell biology is well deserved and we look forward to many years of excellent science and novel clinical treatments.


EMBO’s work includes mentoring young scientists and strengthening research communities across countries, helping to shape the future of science.  As an EMBO Member Professor Gorgoulis will have the opportunity to take part in these activities.

Fifty of the scientists reside in Europe and neighbouring countries; eight Associate Members were elected from China, Japan, New Zealand and the United States.


The latest scientists to join EMBO come from 19 different countries and include 18 female scientists recognized for their contributions to life science research. The EMBO Membership currently comprises more than 1700 life scientists.


“EMBO Members influence the future direction of science and help to strengthen research communities by encouraging interactions between countries,” EMBO Director Maria Leptin remarked. “We welcome these exceptional scientists to EMBO and look forward to their input.”


EMBO Members serve on selection committees for EMBO programmes, mentor young scientists, and provide suggestions and feedback on the activities of EMBO.
New EMBO Members and Associate Members are invited to present their research at the EMBO Members’ Meeting from 28-30 October 2015 in Heidelberg.

A licence deal has been transacted by The University of Manchester’s technology transfer company (UMI3 Ltd) with Lab Supplies, Athens, Greece for a research tool which boosts the understanding of senescent cells role in diverse age-related diseases including cancer.

The 2019 International Cellular Senescence Association (ICSA) conference was held in Athens, Sept 9-12, at the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens. The conference entitled “Cellular Senescence: the bright and dark side” attracted more than two hundred and fifty scientists from all over the world. Subjects presented at the conference covered a wide range of disciplines, providing a comprehensive overview of senescence. The organizing committee consisted of Prof Vassilis G Gorgoulis, Valery Krizhanovsky, Dr Dimitris Kletas and Associate Professor Konstantinos Evangelou.
